Knowledge elaboration: A cognitive load perspective
نویسنده
چکیده
The process of knowledge elaboration is considered from the perspective of cognitive load theory. This theory assumes that the available knowledge structures in long-term memory (LTM) are used to organize and guide cognitive processing in complex learning. Accordingly, the role of external instructional guidance in the process of knowledge elaboration could be described as providing a substitute for knowledge structures missing from LTM. Thus, the executive guidance in complex learning environments is shared between the person (based on his/her LTM knowledge structures) and another expert or instructional means. This article analyzes instructional implications of this assumption. Adaptive learning environments are suggested for tailoring knowledge elaboration processes to changing characteristics of individual learners. Means for identifying and predicting the learner’s LTM-based executive guidance are proposed so that they can be utilized in the building of adaptive learning environments. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. متن کاملCognitive load in interactive knowledge construction
The focus of this special issue is on the cognitive load underlying processes of interactive knowledge construction in a wide range of instructional multimedia platforms. Multimedia comprehension involves the parallel processing of auditoryeverbal and visualepictorial channels within working memory. By means of integrating multimodal information, students are able to acquire new knowledge. Howe...
متن کاملCognitive Load Has Negative after Effects on Consumer Decision Making
Concurrent cognitive load has a devastating effect on consumer decision making. Implicit in the theorizing about cognitive load seems to be that this negative effect disappears when the load is removed. Three experiments explored whether cognitive load produces after-effects and showed that various types of prior cognitive load increase the subsequent impact of easily available information on b...
متن کاملJoint and individual knowledge elaboration in CSCL
This case study aims to illustrate the sequential process of joint and individual knowledge elaboration in computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). Six Dutch secondary school students (three males, three females) participated in the three-week experiment. They were paired based on self-selection. Each dyad was asked to work on moderately-structured problems concerning Newtonian mechani...
متن کاملLearning from Concept Mapping and Hypertext: An Eye Tracking Study
This study examined the effects of prior domain knowledge and learning sequences on learning with concept mapping and hypertext. Participants either made a concept map in a first step and then read the hypertext’s contents combined with concept mapping (high activating condition), or they read the hypertext’s contents first and then made a concept map and re-read the hypertext’s contents (low a...
